FAIRMONT CHATEAU WHISTLER LINKS TO ARTS CULTURE AND HERITAGE AT SQUAMISH LIL’WAT CULTURAL CENTRE
- The ‘Salish Stroll’ Ethnobotanical Path Connects Fairmont Guests to First Nations’ Culture -

WHISTLER, BC June 24, 2015 – On Monday, June 29, 2015 Fairmont Chateau Whistler and the Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre (SLCC) will officially open ‘Salish Stroll’, a pathway designed to guide Fairmont guests and Whistler visitors into existing ethnobotanical trails maintained and interpreted by the Centre’s Aboriginal Ambassadors. A blessing ceremony and celebration with Fairmont staff, Squamish and Lil’wat Nations members, SLCC staff and Whistler community members will mark the opening of this cultural connector.

Guests of the Fairmont Chateau Whistler have expressed a keen desire to learn more about indigenous practices. The new path from the hotel to the Whistler Aboriginal Museum provides an interpretive journey where guests can immerse themselves completely in the arts, culture and heritage of the area’s First Nations. Salish Stroll winds through the forest and is punctuated by signage illustrating the relationship the First Nations people have with Whistler’s plants and trees.

Salish Stroll was completed at the end of April 2015 and was made possible through funding from Fairmont CAREs (Community Assistance and Responsibility to the Environment), a company-wide program that supports environmental and social projects identified by individual Fairmont properties. The legacy of this project will continue for years as guests receive cultural interpretation and education on their walk to the SLCC.

“Fairmont Chateau Whistler is thrilled to present Salish Stroll in partnership with the SLCC to enhance the journey between the centre and our hotel,” says Norman Mastalir, Managing Director, Fairmont Chateau Whistler. “There is potential for such a rich cultural exchange between the First Nations community and our guests, and we hope Salish Stroll provides a memorable experience, as well as long-term sustainability and stewardship, of the natural environment surrounding us.”

The SLCC hired “Another View Landscaping” to design and develop the pathway with existing natural materials on site while preserving the surrounding cedar stumps, moss, lichen, mushrooms, wildflowers and other native plants that specifically have importance to aboriginal life. The SLCC is home to numerous ethnobotanical pathways and Salish Stroll seamlessly connects to those existing interpretive experiences.

“Community partnerships such as the one between the Fairmont Chateau Whistler and the Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre is the foundation of the successes that our resort prides itself on, and is renowned for,” says Brady Smith, Executive Director of the SLCC. “This partnership trail not only showcases the rich flora and fauna of our Nations, but the environmental sustainability efforts of the Fairmont and the SLCC. We look forward to welcoming visitors to this trail network.”
