Fairmont Royal York in Toronto hosts first community screening with presentation of ‘Water,’ directed by Deepa Mehta, on August 10

A night in support of ‘Share Her Journey’ – a movement to champion female storytellers

Pop the bubbly and gourmet popcorn and wave that Canadian flag – the Toronto International Film Festival® is just around the corner and in the spirit of Canada’s 150th birthday, Fairmont Hotels & Resorts is partnering with TIFF to present the “Canada on Screen” series. Three of Canada’s most iconic hotels – Fairmont Royal York in Toronto, Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth in Montreal, and Fairmont Empress in Victoria – will showcase selections from TIFF’s ‘150 essential works in Canadian film history.’ The series debuts with a screening of ‘Water,’ directed by Deepa Mehta, at Fairmont Royal York on Thursday, August 10.

“Fairmont Royal York is honored to officially kick off Fairmont’s support of TIFF’s ‘Canada on Screen’ series, in celebration of this milestone year for our country, “ said Edwin Frizzell, regional vice president and general manager at Fairmont Royal York. “Pair this exciting event with the Toronto Film Office’s recognition of Fairmont Royal York as “The Most Filmed Location in Toronto in 2016,” and with the countdown to the 42nd annual TIFF, we couldn’t be more thrilled to officially support and invite our guests, partners and the community for this special screening.”

The glamorous event kicks off in signature Fairmont style at 6:30 p.m. for VIPs with a red carpet welcome, step-and-repeat, bubbly and passed hors d’oeuvres and at 7:30 p.m. for general public with a glass of bubbles and popcorn with cash bar and candy concession. Jesse Wente, Head, TIFF Cinematheque, will introduce the film, “Water,” directed by Deepa Mehta, at 8 p.m. and host a Q&A immediately following the screening.

"Deepa Mehta's controversial and courageous Water is her masterpiece," said Wente. "Set in India in the 1930s, Water traces the lives of a group Hindu of women, who face discrimination and deprivation for being widows. Stirring, inspiring and remarkably beautiful, it's no surprise that this Canadian classic earned one of Canada's most dynamic filmmakers an Oscar nomination."

A raffle fit for Royalty will include a chance to win a night’s stay in Fairmont Royal York’s Luxury Executive Suite*, breakfast-in-bed for two, valet parking and more**. Tickets sold will benefit TIFF’s “Share Her Journey” campaign, a movement to champion female storytellers.

“The ability to contribute to ‘Share Her Journey’ is extremely special to our team at Fairmont Royal York, and our global AccorHotels family,” said Frizzell. “The support of women in any industry is a cause that is incredibly important to our teams, so it is an honor to be able to host this event and give back a bit to the film and entertainment community, which has contributed so much, both economically and culturally.”

Fairmont boasts a significant history with the silver screen. From Breakfast at Tiffany's (The Plaza) and Doctor Zhivago (Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise), to Notting Hill (The Savoy) and The Rock (Fairmont San Francisco), many notable movies and television shows have filmed at Fairmont properties across the globe. The Toronto Film Office named Fairmont Royal York “The Most Filmed Location in Toronto in 2016,” with more than 15 major television productions and features filmed on location at the hotel last year, including Miss Sloane, Designated Survivor, Orphan Black and The Handmaid’s Tale – bringing the hotel’s grand total to more than 70 major productions over the years.

Complimentary General Admission*** tickets will be released August 1, 2017, at 3 p.m. EST via Eventbrite. There will be a social media giveaway starting August 2, 2017 where followers of Fairmont Royal York Instagram (@FairmontRoyalYork) can ‘tag a friend and follow’ for a chance to win a pair of VIP tickets (five chances available.) Fairmont Hotels & Resorts and TIFF will host two additional “Canada on Screen” events this fall – at Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth in Montreal in October, and at Fairmont Empress in Victoria in November.

“Canada on Screen” is a co-production between TIFF, Library and Archives Canada, the Cinémathèque québécoise, and The Cinematheque in Vancouver – for Canada’s sesquicentennial in 2017. Beginning in January and running throughout the year, this free programme presents moving-image installations, special events and guests, an extensive online catalogue, and screenings across the country, all based on a list of 150 essential moving-image works from Canada’s history, compiled through a national poll of industry professionals.

About Fairmont Royal York For the past 88 years, Fairmont Royal York, originally called The Royal York, has stood tall and proud, immediately opposite of Toronto’s Union Station and Canadian Pacific Railway, located at 100 Front Street West. Designed by Ross and Macdonald, and built by the Canadian Pacific Railway, it was the tallest building in the British Commonwealth, soaring at 28 floors and close to 400 ft. above ground, the hotel quickly set the standard for hospitality during this time. This historic building became, and is still known as a city within a city. Upon opening, the state-of-the-art hotel offered 1,048 guest rooms equipped with a radio, private shower and bath in each room. In addition, The Royal York included a large Concert Hall, which was home to Canada’s largest pipe organ, weighing in at 50 tons with five manuals and 107 stops. The telephone switchboard was 66 feet long and required 35 operators. The 1.5 acres of public rooms also included a 12-bed hospital and a 12,000-book library. The hotel was also home to a glass-enclosed roof garden, the largest hotel kitchen in Canada with a bakery that could produce over 15,000 French rolls a day. In 2016, the hotel recently completed a 1,200-room $150M renovation project to now boast 1,373 renovated luxury accommodations and will soon undergo a $200M investment with new meeting rooms and event spaces, Fairmont Gold and a refresh to all remaining dining outlets. The hotel was also recognized by The Toronto Film Office as “The Most Filmed Location” for 2016 – which celebrates its starlight in endless films and TV productions. It is no wonder that Fairmont Royal York Hotel continues to play such a prominent role in Toronto’s history.
