Shawn Cox, Director of Golf

As Director of Golf, Shawn Cox oversees all golf operations, including tournament programs and staff supervision for The Grand Golf Club. Since joining The Grand Golf Club in 2006, Shawn has been instrumental in launching and designing a variety of programs, including The Grand Golf Performance Academy, which encompasses seven acres of practice area and cutting-edge techniques including a SAM PuttLab, Blast, K-Vest 3-D, Trackman technology and online digital video analysis.

A member of the Professional Golfers Association (PGA) of America, Shawn completed the PGA’s specialty certification in instruction in 2005. In addition, he is a Titleist Performance Institute Level 3 Certified Fitness, Biomechanics and Junior Instructor. He currently serves on both the Education and Teaching Committee for the Southern California PGA.

Shawn previously served as assistant head golf professional at La Jolla Country Club and Torrey Pines Municipal Golf Course, where he founded the Junior Golf Club. A native of Seattle, Cox holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Washington, where he was on the National and Rose Bowl Championship Football Team and inducted into the “Husky” Hall of Fame.

Derek Uyeda, Lead Staff Instructor

Derek Uyeda has been teaching golf in San Diego for 20 years, seven of which have been as Lead Staff Instructor at The Grand Golf Club. Derek was named Southern California’s PGA Teacher of the Year in 2009, after receiving the same award from his local San Diego PGA Chapter.  Derek was also named one of the top 35 golf instructors in California by Golf Digest.

Derek has become an authority on the use of video swing analysis, and is trained and certified in the use 3-D analysis, TrackMan, Flightscope and the SAM Putt Lab. Derek is known for his expertise in the short game and putting, and has worked with students of all ages and skill levels including Tour athletes Charley Hoffman, Chris Riley, Tyrone Van Aswegen , D.A. Points, Xander Schaufelle, James Heath, Johan Carlsson, Aaron Goldberg, Tour, Russell Surber, and Gunn Yang.

When not teaching or on the practice range or course, Derek enjoys spending time with his wife and three children.

Glen Daugherty, Staff Instructor

Glen Daugherty has been a member of the PGA of America for over thirty years. Having competed professionally on the Canadian, European, and Australian Tours, Glen began his career as a Teaching Professional in 1982 in Minneapolis, MN. He has since taught golf as the Head Golf Professional at Sentry World Sports Center in Stevens Point, WI. and as the Director of Golf at The Farms Golf Club in Rancho Santa Fe, CA.

Glen has helped develop many players throughout his career, several of whom have gained college scholarships due to their golf accomplishments.  While many of Glen’s young students have become accomplished players, including Gunn Yang, 2014 U.S. Amateur Champion and Yani Tseng, formerly the #1 ranked woman player in the world, he teaches golfers of all ages and skill levels. He takes pride in his ability to help all players learn to play better and enjoy the game.

Erik Wilson, Head Golf Professional

As Head Golf Professional, Erik Wilson oversees all day-to-day operations within The Grand Golf Club and is the direct liaison for resort group golf events.  He first joined The Grand Golf Club in 2004 as member of the player services team.

A member of the PGA of America since 2009, Erik enjoys connecting new students to the game of golf through simple methods and approach.  He believes in establishing the core fundamentals of the golf swing before fining tuning technique.

Erik attended Oregon State University where he earned a BA in Exercise Sports Science.

Marlon M. Holloway, PGA Assistant Golf Professional

Marlon Holloway has committed himself to growing the game of golf.  A San Diego native, he earned an Associate’s Degree in Golf Complex Management from San Diego Golf Academy, and received his PGA Class A membership in 2014. Marlon is perusing continued education with the PGA of America and enjoys sharing his passion for golf with others.

William Foster, Assistant Golf Professional

An Assistant Golf Professional at The Grand Golf Club since August of 2013, William Foster started his career in the golf industry while still in high school.  His passion for the game led him to enroll in the Professional Golf Management Program at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.  He graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Recreation & Sport Management and has been a Class A member of the PGA of America since 2013.

Having worked at several high-end private and resort facilities in Oregon, Hawaii, and California, William has a wealth of experience to draw from in providing members and guests with a memorable experience when visiting The Grand Golf Club.  He currently oversees merchandising operations and membership inquiries, as well as instructing weekly junior clinics.

Eric Nilsson, Assistant Golf Professional

Eric Nilsson joined The Grand Golf Club in early 2014 and quickly established himself as leading assistant golf professional. An honors graduate from The Golf Academy of America, Eric is currently in the PGA Apprenticeship Program, and hopes to pursue a career as a full-time Head Golf Professional upon completion.

Adam Cook, Assistant Golf Professional

As an assistant golf professional Adam Cook contributes to all golf operations, including management of play on course, tournament preparations and execution, and purchasing and selling of merchandise. Since joining The Grand Golf Club in 2011, Adam has played a vital role in the growth the Clubs Junior Varsity Golf Clinic.

Adam obtained his Bachelor of Business degree from the University of Phoenix and shortly therafter began his apprenticeship in the Professional Golfers Association (PGA). He is currently a Level 2 PGA apprentice, a Level 1 certified Titleist Performance Institute instructor, and Blast Motion Sensor Instructor.

Adam previously served in the United States Navy as a firefighting instructor where he earned multiple awards including a Navy Achievement Medal, Letter of Accommodation, and Junior Sailor of the Quarter. He served on two deployments in the Persian Gulf in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Phil Rodgers, Staff Instructor

San Diego native, Phil Rodgers is a seasoned golfer, having won five times on the PGA Tour in the 1960’s. After a stint on the Senior PGA Tour, Phil has become a much sought-after teacher, well known for the short game.  One of his first pupils was Jack Nicklaus, who publicly credited Rodgers with teaching him more precise wedge play, which helped him win his 4th U.S. Open Championship in 1980.  For decades Golf Digest has ranked Rodgers in their Top 50 teachers.

Lance Gill, Staff Performance Coach

Lance Gill serves as the Performance Director and Co-Director of the Titleist Performance Institute Fitness Advisory Board. His role involves establishing protocols for player development in the fields of functional movement restoration, physical screening, strength and power screening and development, and player development. Lance also serves as Lead Instructor for TPI Level 1 and Level 2 Fitness Seminars globally.  As President of Lance Gill Performance, a private golf performance-based company specializing in the betterment of golfers in the areas of fitness, screening, biomechanics, instruction, mental, nutritional, programming, and Life Coaching, Mr. Gill has personally taught over 10,000 experts all over the world.

Kayleigh Franklin, Fitness Director for Lance Gill Performance

Kayleigh Franklin brings a wealth of manual therapy, exercise prescription, physical assessment, and customer service experience to the Lance Gill Performance (LPG) team. Her skillset crosses many domains and allows LGP clients to experience a fuller range of service on their journey to reaching their goals.

Kayleigh serves a very broad cross section of clients ranging from children to adolescents, to both male and females, in all age categories. She has experience working with elite level LPGA and PGA tour winners, and has acted as the European liaison for TPI in Level 1 classes for four years as an assistant instructor.
